Printing Capabilities in 1 Source Data

There are currently four ways to print documents in 1 Source Data.  Two are the standard print methods offered by Internet Explorer and Acrobat Reader.  Two more, ePrint and Express Print, are modules that need to be downloaded and installed.

Standard Internet Explorer Printing

Some features of 1 Source Data, such as Web-based reports and invoices, print in Web-based format using the printing capabilities of Internet Explorer.  Pages intended for standard printing will have buttons marked Print or Print Screen.  Older versions of 1 Source Data also used "Print HTML".

Although the conventional Print command is still accessible from Internet Explorer's File menu, use of this command is not encouraged.

Advantage: Quick printing speed.
Disadvantage: Format may not be consistent.  Printing compatibility depends on your version of Internet Explorer.

Standard Acrobat Reader Printing

Any report viewable as a PDF file can be printed with Acrobat Reader's standard printing method.  Press the printer icon on the Adobe toolbar to print in standard format.

Advantage: Consistent printing format and less software dependency.
Disadvantage: PDF documents are larger files and may take longer to download than plain HTML, but this is not an issue with high-speed connections.

Express Print

Express Print is a module that allows you to print a PDF document without generating the PDF document onscreen.  Press the Express Print button to download and print a PDF file.

Since the utility of Express Print is nearly duplicated in the newer ePrint module, this module may be discontinued in the near future.  New users are not required to download or install Express Print.

Advantages: Consistent printing format and eliminate the need to preview the PDF document before printing.  Allows Print as Image option as a workaround for incompatible printer drivers.
Disadvantages: Can only print one document at a time.  No capability for automatic printing.

ePrint

The ePrint module allows you to print a PDF document without generating it onscreen.  Unlike the Express Print module, ePrint is capable of batch printing multiple files without requiring a separate print command for each document.  To use batch printing, press the Batch Print button or select items with checkboxes and choose the Print Selected button.  To ePrint individual files, use an ePrint button, a printer icon, or the Automatic Print feature.

ePrint uses its own printing dialog to control printer settings.  You will be asked to choose a printer and the paper size.  This dialog usually appears every time you start ePrint.  Automatic Print, however, does not display this dialog every time, and allows you to change its settings from the My Account screen.

The latest release of ePrint is version 3.0.  If you have an older version, we recommend that you upgrade.  If you don't know what version you have, you can use the System Information utility on the Download page; check the description listed next to New ePrint.

With ePrint version 3, you can manually change some printing options.  The Settings link at the lower left of the panel opens a settings page, which allows you to change basic logging and printing options.  Logging options should only be used to report problems to technical support.  The ML Printer option controls ePrint's virtual printer support, and should be used unless your printer drivers do not support it.  (An undesirable side effect of bypassing the virtual printer is that any changes specified may not take effect when they are first used.)  Although more advanced options are available, those settings should only be changed by qualified support technicians.

ePrint can be installed either by using the Installation Wizard or by manually downloading it from the Download page.  You will need to restart your computer for ePrint to complete the installation process if you are running Windows 95, 98, or Me.

Advantages: Consistent printing format, allows batch printing and automatic printing.
Disadvantages: Installation of ePrint may require a reboot to complete the installation.  Requires printer drivers to be 100% compatible with Adobe Acrobat Reader; this problem will be eliminated in the future. See ePrint Troubleshooting
